If someone has said don’t judge a book by its cover, this book proves it true in a negative way. The title suggests that the book will say something on self improvement and to break the ongoing rules which is completely false, infact the book teaches us rules and formulae (like literally) in order to have employee engagement and how it can result in profitable business.
The whole book talks about how to be a good manager and how to make your subordinates feel welcomed, cared and loved with phrases which are repeated multiple times and all chapters only proves a single point which is hire good (talented to be precise) employees and emphasise on the talent. It says nothing on self improvement, but only mentions what’s to be done to keep the business profitable or running smoothly with respect to employee management.
The book uses slightly tougher English and sometimes twisted sentences which requires multiple readings in order to understand. The last chapter literally has formulas, tables and algorithm to prove that how employee engagement affects the business which is based on some survey done by “Gallup” and few others. You would find it vague and extremely tough to believe these numbers, first of all it will be too difficult to even understand these numbers. By understanding formula and number, how I am actually breaking the rules.
Last but not the least, All examples used are of foreign companies and employees, we need to understand that Indian companies doesn’t work that way and hence the teachings (if any) are irrelevant in the practical world. Nevertheless, Indian companies are now a days fairing better than foreign companies who also stay away from any wrong doings unlike Biggest US banks like Goldman Sachs who have been fined multiple times and several employees have been arrested.
