When I saw who the two lead roles were I thought this sounds promising, and I was not disappointed. Wonderfully played by Vanessa Redgrave, Lowry’s mother is at times an unbearable snob, disappointed with life and the men in it, she rules her sons daily existence from her bed. Timothy Spall, in a touching performance as ‘Laurie’, is a devoted, long-suffering son whose only escape is to paint at night in the attic. A fascinating insight into the man behind the paintings.
