Frustrating mediocre. Well to start with what’s I liked: Music and characters (most of them at least.) Designs, concept, animation, all of that was really good I think. I really liked Luisa and Doleros. As for the pretty much everything else…. Ugh. Camille (Camilo? Can’t remember his name). I wanted to like him, but he ended up being really 2D in terms of personality and has little to no purpose in the story. Mirabel’s Abeula. I freaking hated her “redemption”. It felt so forced for some reason and did not seem to justify her actions at all. She was a really bad person and even though she admitted to her mistakes or whatever it didn’t feel right. Isabela. SHE WAS SO UNLIKABLE. Her song worked (kind of) and it made me like her a little more, but geez, she’s like a mean Mary Sue. The magic. It should’ve been gone forever or at least for a long time. It works better for the message that you don’t need magic to be special. Also it’s just such a Disney thing to do. Also, the consequences of the magic disappearing didn’t feel like it was so bad. So Mirabel’s purpous in the story felt not really needed. The magic disappearing would affect anyone them and their town, which seemed way too dependent on the family anyways. Such a Disney movie, gave off strong Moana and Raya and the Last Dragon vibes I think, but the characters felt less developed than Moana.
