This had the potential to be so much more than what it was. The writing, maybe deliberately, was robotic and child like. The story never went anywhere with any depth.

I was so excited to read a book set in Glasgow in the 1980s, having experienced life there, but this was such a depressing read. For as much as trainspotting was grim it still had humour. Shuggie Bain is bleak from the get go. I actually gave up half way through because I don't want to waste any more hours on such a boring ,depressing miserable bunch of characters and story line.
