Really loved this! Currently on episode 6 and that was all watched in one sitting!
First of all if you're expecting accuracy this is not based on a Jane Austen book its based on Julia Quinns series which were based on Jane Austens books but written in the last few decades. They were not completely historically accurate either but didn't detract from the love stories. I really liked reading these books as a teen and watching this series as an adult has made me smile with the memories.
People are moaning about diversity in the cast but honestly I can't imagine anyone other than this actor play the Duke now and Lady Danbury was superb. In the netflix adaptation, a comment Simon the Duke makes about the fact King George marrying a Queen of colour paved the way for other people of colour and he worries it might be taken away hence his reluctance to marry was, I thought, well done. This was clearly added to explain the diversity in this tv series.
Its sad people are moaning the cast was diverse...I really enjoyed it and as a person of colour myself felt I could relate more to the cast than usual period dramas.
Its not historically accurate I get that. But I remember reading these books as a feel good diversion and that's exactly the feeling this netflix series gave me.
The Queen wasn't in the book series but I really liked her character too.
There are some changes in the series I note below and the following are my opinions on where I think this story arc will go:
It may not be accurate at all I'm just speculating.
*Warning: potential SPOILERS*
Given there are 8 books in Julia Quinns Bridgerton series, and the entire season 1 was based on the events of book 1 I think there may well be 8 seasons potentially. 🤷♀️
However, if they wanted to reduce this down they could leave the 2 younger siblings Hyacinth and Gregory's (who in the book series grow up and have their own romances) stories out and also the 6th sister Francesca had her story set in Scotland so there was not much to do with the Bridgertons really so maybe that one might not be a season either. Just speculating here. So potentially 4 more seasons. And book 3: Benedict and Sophies story was my second fave, Eloises story being my favourite, really looking forward to all these!
Marina wasn't a major character in the books either. So without revealing the plot of book 5 I dont know if she will make an exit in the next few seasons (depending on how they plan this) or she will be Eloises love rival.
Her storyline had mental illness in it so I hope if they do stick to the book they portray that properly.
All in all I really like this adaptation. Its fun its frivolous and the characters are well done.
*update now I've watched the whole thing*
Based on the information from the final few episodes, I no longer believe that Benedict will be gay meaning that there is no reason for the storylines of both brothers swap, meaning we will hopefully meet Kate Sheffield in the next season 😀
Off to reread the books now
