I had interest in seeing this movie when it first came out, since I am an avid sci-fi watcher, and the premise frankly sounded fascinating. Unfortunately I didn’t make it to the theater, and the movie subsequently skipped my mind. Almost a year later, it occurred to me to give it a try. I knew it had been critically panned, and generally disliked, but a person swayed by popular opinion I am not (anyway, even if it DID turn out to be bad, Keanu Reeves was in it so...).
I rented the movie, and settled in to watch, not quite sure of what to expect. All I can say is:
WOW. From beginning to end, it was gripping, thought provoking, and just incredible to watch.
All of the reviews bashing this movie were obviously written by critics and audiences unable to follow well written, original storylines, and complex, meaningful plots. This one’s for the thinkers. And Reeves’ performance... perfection. For those who wanted him to play the role more emotional, or whatever, first of all, that’s not his style, and second, he played this role exactly as it should be played- a brilliant scientist who had to keep his emotions in check in order to accomplish his purpose. No other way would have suited the movie. I do admit-no spoilers- the ending is just a tad ambiguous, but still incredibly satisfying. Give this film a chance. I have a feeling this will someday be recognized as the truly great story it is.
