I hate this book, it is pure pain. It's just so bad, it's boring, uneventful and slow. The whole story is an allegorical novella about Stalinism/communism and how that ideology never works out.
In the begining the animals work together to overthrow the human in charge of the farm and it works, all the animals are equal and the work-to-reward ratio is fair for all, but as the story continues the divide between the pigs (leaders) and the working animals widens. The pigs start to change the rules to their liking and by the end, the other animals can't tell the difference between the pigs who were once their heroes, and the humans who were, and still are the bad guys. The quote by Lord Acton sums up the main plot, and he said. 'Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.' This is the recurring theme of the story.
The book also depicts real-life persons (as animals) and events that happened/existed during the reign of primarily Stalin, but to a further extent the Soviet Union. (as it all acts out the situations that then lead/led to Stalin becoming the leader).
My personal opinion and why I dislike it so much is that at the time the book was made it, was prevalent as the book portrayed recent events in the soviet union which further bolstered the relevance of the book, but if you wanted to learn about the ideological flaws of com you just pay attention to what happened in the real world.
