I knew social media is sort of a necessity for us (I am a first-generation immigrant and my kids are first American-born generation with no family or friends nearby). At best, it could be an outlet for creativity and soul searching. But quite often, even when it is not destructive, it is counter-productive, and dangerously addictive.
However, knowing it from my personal experience (and observing my teen kids) is one thing. Hearing it from the once-insiders is another. Not until I watched this documentary did I realize these platforms are not just addictive because of the consumers' behaviors, they are being made to be even more addictive intentionally. I am not concerned of losing jobs to AI, but I am seriously worried about having many generations who do not know how to use their brain actively and productively. I teach at college level and the attention span plus critical thinking are already very bad, and it will just become worse if nothing is done about social media.
