I was reluctant to watch this due to the heavy nature of the topic however I was pleasantly suprised by the nuanced take on surviving sexual violence/assault... "I may destroy you" is a very skillfully written series by Micheala Coel who shows how trauma is often covered with "saving face" even among our dearest friends, especially in episode's 2 and 4.
Also the most culturally accurate depiction of life for black londeners in 2019/2021 outside of the typical' British black road man type of shows... It represents black 20 somethings and 30 somethings in a more balanced light outside of usual stereotypical paradigm i.e; personal instructors, writers, actors young creatives who are perusing their careers in their fields of art and making money from it (black British 90's kids have been waiting for something like this for a hot minute). Even the accents are more natural and not an over exageration of working class british black london accent's. Finally a black british show that didnt make me cringe at any points! The soundtrack lends moments of happy nostalgia for those of us who listened to the likes of Jagged Edge during our teenage years. The setting is also varied with trips across europe, again giving a more holistic depicting young black british 20/30somethings and the globalised way in which our generation navigates their relationships and careers.
Just as I thought I found my favourite Micheala Coel production, she brings out "I may Destroy you" which has blown my mind!
