The only reason this movie is praised so much is because it's the first of its kind. Tobey Maguire is a good Peter Parker, but he is a terrible Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire just doesn't feel right being Spider-Man, but the issue isn't the actor; it's the writing. Spider-Man is writen so inaccurately that it's funny. Spider-Man is supposed to be, confident, crack jokes, and kick butt. Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man maybe only comes out as confident unless you count the cheesy writing such as when he says, "It's you who's out, Gobby!" If that was supposed to be funny, it worked, but it worked for the wrong reason. And then there's the biggest problem with these movies: M.J. She is TERRIBLE! I mean TERRIBLE! She constantly toys with Peter's emotions throughout the whole trilogy, she's constantly in danger, and she is just annoying. Looking past all the bad stuff now, there are some good things about this film and its next two films. Tobey Maguire perfectly portrayed Peter Parker (but not Spider-Man), there are many memorable and unforgettable scenes, and this Spider-Man has some of the best character developement. With all that being said, this movie and its trilogy is very okay. It's right in the middle of good and bad. There are many things that are bad about it, but there are many good things about it.
