I would recommend watching this film first, play the game while watching the anime. The film is pretty much a long opening cinematic for the game, but that's not to say the film is bad at all. In fact, the story of the film might not that strong standing alone, but the animation techniques, the world, and the cinematography are spot on. I really enjoyed the story too actually.
