This movie is absolutely atrocious. It stuns me that some people enjoy this whatsoever. By the end I was rubbing my temples and at tears for how disappointed I was.
First off. The humor at best fits the mind of a child back in 2011. Not one thing in this movie made me laugh- It felt forced and random. Esp. king Jul falling in love with a small puffy threatening bear in a too-too. As the characters said in the movie- it's a cliche. The plot was a MESS- completely; the clutter of the stuff that the writers are all trying to fit in at once feels as if the writers were focused on one thing and then remembered out of no where that the other characters exist.
-THE VILLAIN is one of the worst I've ever seen in terms of story, it felt like I was watching a god in a suit- completely over powered. She felt more like a plot device than a real villain. The godly powers made me feel she'd fit more in the marvel universe- for gods sake she's a human! Why does she run around on all fours, how can she run through multiple walls and how can her sense of smell track down every single movement that had been made. I'd love more explanation for this- maybe even a motive as to why she animal hunts- maybe a preview of her training to get to her ungodly powers, but by the look of it she doesn't train- as her character design is atrocious. She looks short and stubby- not nearly strong enough to do half the things she does.
-The development of the characters were extremely forced - I can hardly remember any of the characters names or even that scene in the start of the movie. Alex got most of the attention as always; but even that was hardly enough to satisfy the need of development I have. Gloria's and the giraffes personality BECAME their relationship- there was not one moment with them alone other than before they start dancing. I love that they're together and all but the relationship shouldn't replace them as separate characters at all, in fact it hardly felt like a relationship, not enough chemistry was built between them in this movie-
The circus characters were forgettable and hypocritical. I felt like the best character in this movie was the tiger because he felt so different to the rest of the copy paste characters [the leopard felt like Gloria but smaller, the seal felt like a toned down king Julian or a mix between marty and the giraffe]. The writers tried to show his backstory and if anything it was an okay attempt- though it felt more like trying to clap at a child's traced drawing in a pile of crayon scribbles.
This movie was by far the most infuriating thing I have had to sit through- It was obviously made for the money and has had no work put into it other than the advertisement. I personally think it felt so off because it doesn't have the same charm as the other movies. This movie followed a strict plot line where as the others actually felt like they had more freedom put into it- more time for the characters. I honestly think they added the circus because it'd be easier to sell toys and not a thing could change my mind.
Overall I give this movie a: please don't turn us into marketable plushies dreamworks- NOOOO out of 10.
I feel like I don't need to say the pros of this movie- there are plenty of reviews saying they loved it because of bright colours and the nostalgia. Though I can't seem to find a one specifically about the movie itself.. interesting.
