'The Hidden Blade' speaks to the downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate and how there was a struggle between a old and new way of thinking. It's more than just another samurai film in that it specifically points to domestic and romantic elements in the japanese culture at the time as well as the mindset of the vassals of the lords.
