Several years ago, I played on Apocalyptic Station and then Soapstation when the community split. I will say wholeheartedly that I had the best experiences playing on those servers. I miss them, and I've been trying to get back into the game, but I can't seem to find a server that captures the same feeling as those two. Maybe it's just the nostalgia.
As far as the game itself, it has a pretty complicated UI and a very steep learning curve. You can do anything from bumming around the station mopping up messes to complex virology, surgery, engineering, and scientific research. With a fully-functional atmospheric simulator, this game can be very immersive despite the simplistic pixelated graphics. And of course, in my opinion, the roleplay is what makes the game. Of course, some people prefer low-RP servers where chaos and combat is more common, which is fine.
All in all, I'd say you should try this game out if you have a lot of time on your hands to learn.
