So I'm gonna help out my non melatonin brothers and sisters on this review thread. You don't get this movie because it had such a cultural metaphoric tone that you simply don't understand. The so called "rambling" that you heard were decades of issues the "colored" man (woman) have endured while trying to prove their worthiness and value to white America. All the while, the undertone strategies of this film was to display how the black man's talent has repeatedly been exploited to build a wealth culture that was not inclusive.
Hats off to Mrs. Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Bozeman for an Oscar worthy performance. Their roles were genuine and you felt the passion they had to portray these characters in full authenticity.
The only unfavorable criticism I have regarding this film was the continuous cursing and blaspheming God. It is hard to imagine how Mr. Bozeman was able to fulfil such a role having to stand on his own Christian principles and beliefs while enduring a terminal illness. I'm sure repentance was real after every shoot.
