This is a brilliant retelling of an old classic which I still love, but this version is much more relevant to the times. Older versions kind of dance around the real reasons that Ebeneezer Scrooge became the man that he did, but this movie paints a very clear picture. I highly recommend this movie. Guy Pearce was genius as Scrooge. Mrs. Cratchet's character was raw and authentic - this is a strong woman who would do anything for the love of her child. I LOVED this version of Dickens' classic.

I absolutely love this movie. The characters are complex, diverse and interesting, each with their own story that leads to an understanding of the circumstances of the heroine and empathy. Kate Winslet is perfect in her role, as is Judy Davis as the crazy mother. I love it when beautiful women are not afraid to be "ugly" in a movie. The surreal backdrop of the dusty Austrialian town against haute couture - each scene is full of beautiful visuals and clever dialogue. And the topper is sweet Liam Hemsworth as very likable and swoony as he courts Kate. I highly recommend the movie and will be watching it for the sixth time here very shortly.
