in this era a toppling Christopher Columbus statues, it is more important than ever to understand why those statues were there in the first place. They were placed in public places in acknowledgement of the Italian Americans who, quite literally, built this country. R. Gambino in his 1974 book, told this story eloquently, it's truth is no more important today, perhaps even more so, since the old prejudice against Italian Americans continues to be overshadowed by other, trendier, civil rights movements.
