The game is meant to make you actually feel bad for the characters. It is a dog eat dog world in it. But perhaps the question is, why is it dog eat dog? There are a bunch of scenes that really stick in my memory. To avoid spioilers I will say this: You get to see what the day in the life is for your sanctuary. You will see what each group values for education, and food. It is really interesting.
