This is my favorite book. It’s long and hard to adapt to TV. It’s been fun to watch but it’s been butchered to be honest and the omission of certain parts of the story do not make sense to keep in line with the story. There are important parts from the books that in my opinion cannot and should not be left out, or have been put out of order, which have been.
1. One of the most favorite parts is the beginning where Rand sees the Fade on the road. This sets the tone for the whole book. For me it was foolish to leave it out.
2. Thom Merrilin - We meet him in the Two Rivers in the book and should have done so here. He comes and sings his songs at the Winespring. It’s important for him to be introduced earlier than he was. Also the destruction of the town happened too quickly although I know the story needs to move along. It was too fast.
3. Baerlon and Whitebridge - This was also too important to miss out. Apparently the introduction of dark friends was more important, while they are there are scenes in the two towns that show us how powerful Moraine is and also they meet Min in Baerlon. She has not even been in the show yet.
4. Caemlyn, Elaine and Morgase. Elaine is an extremely important character in the book and Rand should have met her already. Morgase is also an important character. It’s bizarre to skip to the White Tower already and miss a huge section of the book and not introducing a major part of the story.
5. Perrin and Elyas - The wolf thing with Perrin will be better explained if Elyas is introduced also. I assume at this point he is not in the show. That is incredibly disappointing!
6. Bayle Doman - He is a character that appears regularly in the books and probably shouldn’t be left out.
7. The Aiel - They were mentioned in episode 5 but should’ve been introduced to us already. They are extremely important characters.
8. Lews Therin Telamon - How can you leave the opening to the book out? As a viewer you 100% have to know who he is.
There are more characters that should be in and more information should be explained. The book is very large and is very difficult for TV. Sorry to be a damper but as a huge fan of the book I’m disappointed with what’s been done but also excited that it’s been attempted and will still watch it.
Rosamund Pike is an excellent Moraine. She is too at the forefront at the minute. The book is mainly about the Two Rivers folk. Rand, especially. That’s ok for now but it should go in this direction at some point.
