As a lifelong DC Comics fan (I'm talking close to four decades of reading their comics ) I have to say I am surprised by the negative reviews left by audience members ... folks pay attention to the critic reviews on rotten tomatoes (88 percent on average) as well as the audience reviews, critics are giving the show high marks for a reason. As much as I hate to say it, whether they're consciously aware of it or not I believe a lot of the negative audience reviews are from people who just can't stand what they perceive to be "political correctness."
And yes, like pretty much all CW shows nowadays political correctness is absolutely part of the narrative... the question is, how deftly is it woven into the storyline and does it have a positive impact on the show as a whole (and yes I am fully aware there are some horrible shows out there who substitute political correctness for good writing - the first season of Doctor Who with Jodie Whittaker is a good example of this). Please believe me when I say after watching each and every Batwoman episode aired to date, I applaud how they have turned the "Black Lives Matter" topic into something that gives the show a genuine tone and depth that it arguably lacked before. And to be clear it's not ALL "Black Lives Matter" either, there's plenty of DC comic oriented material in addition to that to keep fanboys or fangirls entertained (I'm particularly enjoying watching what one could argue is the female version of the Riddler).
To be clear I was a fan of season one of Batwoman too - that is, after the first several clumsy episodes where it was finding it's footing and setting up future plotlines.. then when Ruby Rose left my initial response was " Oh great there goes the show"... but after watching Javicia Leslie in action (first two episodes watching her freak right the heck out trying to drive the batmobile and messing up using the batsuit more often than not are downright hilarious) I thoroughly enjoyed how well she assumed the role as the show's new protagonist - she nicely balances personal strength and emotional vulnerability and quite honestly in comparison to Leslie (sorry Ruby), Rose's performance came off as wooden and expressionless at times in season one ... the plotlines with Batwoman's "sidekick" Mary as far as her relationship with her dad is progressing nicely, I find Jacob Kane's emotional and mental deterioration as the show goes on interesting, and as others have pointed out Alice is as always endlessly entertaining - it's wonderful watching her backstory become more fully fleshed out as well, Alice fans will find a lot to enjoy here as she enjoys even more of the spotlight than she did in season one.
Believe me, Ruby Rose being gone does not hamper the show in any way... if anything it gives it the fresh shot in the arm it needs to rise to new heights.
So before you dismiss the show out of hand based on the negative reviews here.. do me a favor, watch the first two episodes. It won't cost you a thing, just watch it for free on the CW app and put up with the commercials like I do :P ... I guarantee you'll be sold on the show after that. For heaven's sake people please start watching this, don't let the show die due to irate viewers too enraged at the thought of a "black batwoman" to give the show it's proper due. People hated Miles Morales as Spider Man and personally I though Morales' comic book series was not the greatest... but then look at how well " Spider Man Into the Spider Verse" (the movie) turned out, which has Morales as the main protagonist. Please guys, just give the show a chance.
