Personally I’d give the movie a solid 5. The movie had some really great visual concepts and imagery, and some visuals were reminiscent of the original Lion King, for example, the scene during Hakuna Matata walking on the log across the moon is a truly iconic scene in the 1994 Lion King.
However, when it came down to it the acting was subpar. Keeping the original voice actor was a great move on Disney’s part but it didn’t have nearly the same effect as the 1994 movie.
I don’t mind that they didn’t change the storyline I had just hoped that the director or producers would add depth or different dimensions to the characters. The scenes that were supposed to be emotional were bland and void of life. Scars iconic line was tarnished by the lifeless lions and practically no feelings were conveyed in this scene that is quite literally the most impactful moment of the Lion King. The scene felt rushed and honestly it was quite laughable how poorly it was handled. Personally, my favorite part of the movie was Seth Rogan as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon. I also enjoyed the subtle (and not so subtle) hints at other Disney movies. Other notable scenes are the ones without dialogue, specifically the fight scene between Scar and Simba, the visuals were absolutely stunning and it felt like how the rest of the movie was intended, it felt very realistic and I truly enjoyed watching that scene... until the actors began to talk.
All in all the movie was very disappointing for someone who has already watched the original. Your kids might enjoy though.
