To understand closet racism in America all you have to do is read the IMDB reviews about Spike Lee's new film, Da 5 Bloods. You will find hundreds of 1 and 2 star reviews tearing this movie down. That's sad really because it is a very good film. They review based on their politics, their bigotry, their racism. They use the review to hide those ugly reasons. They will tell you it's bad story-telling, it's film goofs, bad cinematography. Those are diversions from their racism. I wrote a review. I only have one voice. My voice is from the heart. I have no racism or bigotry in my heart.
Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods is a photographers/videographers dream to watch. The editing is an entire film school lesson. So many reviews are negative about this film and I think it's because they've become comfortable with the simple films they've been watching. Sure, QT will kick them in the junk once in a while but they will settle back into spoon fed drivel in no time. Some may just hate the political statement a film makes. That's a shame because they miss the art. This film, from the Nikon F carried throughout the film, the 16mm footage edited in here and there, the grainy film common in the 60's, it's just a pleasure to watch. This was done right. Forget your politics, quit questioning age and time, travel back, listen to the songs, enjoy the visual trip. You may find that you actually like the art form. Leave your bigotry and racism in the closet for a moment, you may find that you actually like this film.
