A fantastic movie! Sheela, Santosh and master Dharun Balla, the three main cast had done their best, superb performance!
The family was given notice of 30 days to vacate, the house owner orders the family to give the key if they happen to go out, so that the owner can show the house for potential future tenants. One day the tenant family goes out, returns home and waits for the key for hours as the owner has gone out without leaving the key to any neighbors. The owner returns late in the night, hands the key..... this is the scene... no dialogue.. the expression of Sheela about their ability to question the owner.... and a old song from radio at the background “ காரணம் ஏன் தோழி? ஆ.. மாலைப்பொழுதின் மயக்கத்திலே”.... the scene ends. The director speaks via visual and background radio songs in many places, these are master strokes of the director Chezhiyan! It talks very well about home owners atrocities and no rights as tenants in Chennai (Which should be applicable to other metros and other 2 rung cities too), how house owners insist their beliefs on tenants like, not to cook meat during the tenancy, owners asking about caste/religion of tenants before leasing out. It also captures the difficulties of life of people in a film industry, the dreams of middle classes etc etc. The film talks about class differences (வர்க்க வேறுபாடுகள்) in a scene, the family waits for traffic light on their old moped (two wheeler)) adjacent to a family in a car, the boy gets a glimpse of a little gal in the car with a sophisticated toy, the light turns green, the car moves, the old moped fails to move, the boy wants to race and catch the car.... these all in few seconds... what is the director trying to convey? Upper class progresses rapidly where as lower/middle class struggles at the same start line with same opportunities.. a good film/novel should show the “tip of the iceberg” and leave to viewers imagination/interpretation. In that way this movie is a classic movie. After living in places where tenant rights, tenants privacy rights are defined and enjoyed those rights, this movie really disturbed me a lot!
