Since I have not that much time to write an article about Avatar (though I wish I could) I'll point out a few things that stand out to me:
- Character development: despite what those one-star reviews say about it, the character development in this show is one of the best I've seen. Just take Zuko, the Fire Nation Prince. Okay so I won't be posting spoilers here but just an example: actually I am posting spoilers. He goes from a desperate boy trying to impress his father and get his honor back by kidnapping the Avatar, to.. well just watch the show to find out.
- Great animation
- Great characters, overall. They're generally complex, with Katara struggling to take care of everyone as a responsibility she feels she has ever since her mother died, Toph believing she can do everything on her own, Aang being.. well I don't really like him much but the fate of the world is pretty much completely on his (and his friends.. sort of) shoulders, him being the Avatar, mind you. Zuko is way too complicated for me to even start talking about because I'm afraid I might butcher it, and Sokka, the lovable comedian who likes friendly mushrooms and cactus juice.
- DON'T JUST GIVE UP ON THE FIRST EPISODE, PEOPLE!!!! Character development takes time. You can't just have someone act one way for the first half of the episode and then another the second half and then call it character development. And you can't develop a character in twenty minutes. The reason they all seem so shallow and boring and flat at first is because.. wait for it... IT'S THE FIRST EPISODE. YOU HAVE TO GET TO KNOW THEM, LEARN THEIR STORY.
And that's all the points I feel are worth mentioning. Of course, there are a lot more points to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender, and those are just a few.
So go watch it and make sure to ACTUALLY WATCH PAST THE FIRST FEW EPISODES.
five stars!~
