Okay.
After seeing both Barbie and Oppenheimer, Oppenheimer is the better movie, but only just.
Christopher Nolan manages to hold together the narrative throughout the 3 hours, but the narrative itself really shouldnt have had to endure the 3 hours.
Could the story Nolan was creating capable of being told in a tighter time frame - for sure. So why opt to stretch this out?
The Trinty test itself is not really the story being told. Nor is it a tale of the time and life of Julius Robert Oppenheimer. Fundamentally, its a tale of politics of the day, in particular the reds under the beds period of McCarthy and post McCarthy.
The acting is tight and there are formidable performances from pretty much the entire cast, which is probably why the film hits the three hour mark. That and Nolan's desire to make the longest IMAX footage ever with like 18kms of film. But in my opinion, other than maybe 2 minutes of footage, the film did not really need the IMAX format.
For those who did the Barbie/Oppenheimer double - why? Barbie itself is nearly 2 hours of which maybe 40 minutes is pretty good, 30 minutes confusing and the remainder disappointing.
Oppenheimer comes off better with in my opinion maybe 2hrs 20 minutes of good and 20 mins of pretty good, and 20 of average.
What I am shocked with is the desire by some reviewers to paint both these films as epic must see five out of five stars! They are no where near that rating.
Wanting a film to be good so badly that you convince yourself it was is probably another hangup from COVID restrictions that most people have not been in a theatre to watch a film for so long, they are rating more the experience of being back than the actual film.
Anyway, if you need to see a film, Oppenheimer is my suggestion. Otherwise, and actors and studios will hate me here, there is MUCH better entertainment on streaming networks.
