This film has shot straight into my top 3 movies. The other two would be The Hours and The Reader. For some reason I seem to resonate with emotionally detached women, and have no problem seeing the humanity underneath. I found the pace of this movie thrilling, and I was gasping for breath at least once every 5 minutes. The whole doll scenario was so well done, I don't remember being so unsettled and desperate for a character's welfare for a long time. This reminded me of the novel Death in Venice. It has that same claustrophobia, which weirdly is what I love when I watch a film or read a novel. Superb for a first time director.
