This Western set in the years immediately following the civil war trades in the nuance and more thought provoking parts of the novel for bigger talking points we've all already heard with regard to the south after the end of the war.
I appreciate the good performances by the cast and the good scene setting and cinematography. But the story is twisted by small details into meaning less but being easier to understand. I prefer the story in the novel and the characters as written there. The novel brings you more into the mind of a captive and the reasons who these two end up together. I'd encourage anyone who has seen the movie to read the novel.
