Cross the John Wicke movies with splatter films, and that's pretty.much what you get with Indonesian director Timo Tjahanto, whose previous film The night comes for us is one of my favourite films of recent years. This film features Aurora Ribero as a young assassin working for an assassination bureau called the Shadows, who screws up on a hit in Japan at the beginning, and is then temporarily suspended. In the meantime her neighbour is murdered, and the son is kidnapped , which sets her off on a mission to save the boy and reap vengeance on the criminals holding him. This is a breathtaking film in which the relentless violent action blows you away, and the fight choreography is faultless. Timo doesn't shy away from the gore and one decapitation within the first twenty minutes is brilliantly realised, with the victim stumbling around while semi decapitated. Great action, great effects, great performances especially from the two female leads who both manage to look attractive while covered in blood. An absolutely brilliant film for action fans, and perhaps my film of the years. All praise to Netflix for championing this great director, who could teach Hollywood a hell of a lot on how to make action movies. If you love to watch attractive young women kicking plenty of ass, this is the film for you.
