I pretty much agree with the others who gave 1~3 stars. OST? Great. Visual? Also great.
Story-wise, UGH i dont know whats even going on/what they wanted to do. Its like having 2 different movies, smashed together. I kinda have a gist of what they wanted to portray in the movie, but honestly it felt too forced because they wanted to do SO many stuff all at once. Romance, depression, internet police/sjw, child abuse, normal girl is secretly popular plot, etc etc... In the middle of those sub plots, i just dont know what was the main plot anymore.
Theres also this weird big build-up moment about the beast that fell flat and left me "huh?" because i didnt remember the so-called plot twist character at all. Too many "problem solving/resolution" that felt way too short, that i didnt have a chance to appreciate the moment, they move on way too fast. Its like the people who wrote this story just wanted to slap lots of representation of todays problem but dont actually know much about the said problems.
Most of the characters also feels meh and underdeveloped. Maybe i just expected too much because this is Mamoru Hosoda's movie.... but honestly i've seen better anime movies. Sorry i couldnt properly enjoy this movie, the story-telling wasnt my cup of tea. Im a sucker for good OST and beautiful visuals, but im a bigger sucker for good story-telling, and a well-thought character building/development. I'd even prefer simple visuals but amazing story telling.
Just a thought, maybe this movie wouldnt done better as an anime series rather than a movie. That way, perhaps they could've explore more if they wanted to bring "sub plots" in the story, and they could've developed the characters further. Make them more memorable and leave more impression on people. And perhaps see how those characters impacted the story.
