Bloated, self-indulgent and trying to tell too many stories at once: the importance of family, the trying to start a new life, the difficulties of adolescence, the cruelty and avarice of humans, the gung-ho frat boys of the military, the Special One with the Powers, the connection with animals if we try empathy, the Good versus Evil of innocent native peoples and white American colonisers, etc. etc. Far too much to care about, in what could have been three better movies. The visuals are outstanding, however, and the imagination of the planet’s wildlife and mechanical gadgetry are wonderful and totally believable. Shame that a Boy and his Whale Thing are the highlight of the movie.
Shame that so much money was thrown at one movie instead of actually doing some good in this troubled world.
