Man, this movie was a train wreck.
Before I get started, This movie is entertaining and somewhat enjoyable. My opinion should not stop you from using your time to watch this movie.
Being a fan of the show “LEGO Ninjago, Masters of Spinjitsu,” hearing this movie would come out made me amped up. I was super hyper to watch it, I couldn’t wait. Watching the movie to me was really awesome. I was enjoying it, loving it and when I walked out I said it was “Great”.
I’ve rewatched this movie several times, and boy, I noticed what was wrong immediately.
This movie is targeted towards the demographic audience of the show, mainly young kids from 7-11. When your a kid, and see a show you love get a trailer for it’s own movie, you don’t even have time to watch the trailer again. Your immediate response is to get hyper and amped up. Then, when you actually watch the movie, your so excited you don’t even realize what’s wrong. This is how a lot of these movies are. If you were to rewatch it, you don’t even have to pay attention to see what’s wrong.
My main thing is that they ruined the shows fun and interesting ideas of having ninjas with shiny gold weapons fighting against evil snakes bent on revenge and a dark ruler obsessed with control. Not to mention it was a kids toy that moved on screen for everyone to enjoy. The show had good laughs and comedic affect. The movie takes an entirely different approach, and relies on the tactic that nobody will be paying attention to notice. I will admit, there is a few funny moments where they can get a good laugh out of you, and there are some good action scenes, but overall, it does feel like something is off. One of the main things in Ninjago is the fact that they can do spinjitsu, a spinning offensive move that can clear things out of ones way. This movie glosses over that entirely and makes one terrible joke about them practicing it.
Ninjago is a show about learning the ways of martial arts. This movie almost never uses that besides the one shot of Jackie Chan catching a few plates. The ninja in the movie have mechs, and when they aren’t using them, they are using swords, nunchucks, Etc. It confuses me a slight bit because in the show they use elemental vehicles. I’m not sure whether the producers were trying to replicate that or what. It just feels like a lazy excuse to not use actual fighting affects in what was supposed to be a fighting movie.
Garmadons character in this movie sucks. His personality is just “I’m dumb kids laugh at me please,” like a beg for attention. His purpose in the show was to be a father that wanted to care but couldn’t, so he was hurting himself by not doing that. This movie just makes it seem like he doesn’t care. Not to mention the fact that his “army” is a bunch of furry’s dressed in fish costumes, instead of stone warriors or skeletons.
The main lure for parents is the famous actors like Dave Franco and/or Jackie Chan. I don’t really feel for these actors in anyway whatsoever.
This movie was a good idea but executed in a awful way. If they had looked back and actually used some knowledge and hadn’t been too lazy to include fighting affects, this review would’ve been more positive.
I suggest you watch the show rather than this waste of time.
