Kogan was born in Brooklyn NY in the late 1930's to Jewish parents who had immigrated from Russia after the revolution and WWI. His depiction of his childhood, neighborhood, ducation public school are extraordinary. Kogan is a masterful writer with deep insights into individuals, history, literature, painting, architecture and brings his deep and broad reading to bear on his own personal journey through The High School of Music & Art and Columbia College and Graduate School, through the beat Generation, the political and culture turmoil of the '60's and '70's. I recommend this book to everyone of all generations, all political persuasions, all cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
