Excellent fight scenes and character development. I appreciate the more serious take on this story. No singing or comic relief characters. I cannot speak to cultural accuracy, but the conflict of joining a mans world as a woman is very well portrayed. I’m giving this four stars because of the shadow warriors and the “witch.” The warriors can seemingly run on walls, and this is not explained. Mulan even does this once. The witch has seemingly limitless powers, and it is not explained how or why. Is this simply Chi or is she some actual sorceress? Sort of an unnecessary character aspect for her, but oh well. Also the small meaningful looks that Mulan and Honghui share in training, makes me wonder if he was interested in Mulan when she was pretending to be a man. Lil sus bro, lil sus. The musical callbacks to the original songs were beautiful and moving. The melody to “Reflection” played multiple times and was a lovely message for what the story of Mulan represents. She is for sure my favorite Disney warrior. I don’t say princess because she isn’t. She is a warrior. Not bad Disney. This almost makes up for The Last Jedi.
