I cannot deny that the show looks great, a few of the episodes have great stories, and the overall soundtrack is fantastic.
However the reason this gets a low rating from me is because it has “Star Wars” in the title.
When making a “Star Wars” pushing the boundaries on what we know of the universe has always been welcomed. (The Clone Wars and the KOTOR are great examples of this.)
You can push the boundaries of Star Wars, challenge what’s known about it, and present new visuals to its universe, but you must capture the feel of Star Wars while doing so and respect what has come before it.
This show completely fails in that area unfortunately.
When George was creating the original trilogy, he was basing it off of many different cultures and philosophers from both western and eastern cultures. That’s what makes Star Wars so unique. Each planet has a look and a vibe that resembles a certain country or culture throughout our world.
Visions is the most uninspired piece is Star Wars media released since the Rise of Skywalker. In almost every episode of this show, they didn’t even try to capture that feel. Streets and objects are covered in the Japanese language instead of aurebesh, Lightsabers look like katanas, all the architecture is only inspired by japanese architecture, and even the wardrobes of characters just look like traditional Japanese clothing. Basically this show is just a typical anime version of Japan but with alien extras, lightsabers, and Star destroyers hovering in the skies. Star Wars is just the background for all these short anime episodes, so words like “Jedi”, “Sith” , “Empire” have no weight to them, and stormtroopers, familiar droids and aliens seen in the background come off as cringey fan service. I just imagine Kathleen Kennedy herself looking over the animators shoulders while their sketching and telling them “add some stormtroopers and aliens there so we can remind our viewers this is actually Star Wars.”
Also the logic we know of in Star Wars is completely thrown out the window in this as well. Which can be a good or bad thing depending on who you are.
I don’t dislike this show because it’s just simply an anime, I dislike it because it has no respect for what has come before it. If you want to see a great Star Wars anime that captures the necessary feel, check out “Tie Fighter” on YouTube.
Visions is just not Star Wars, and that’s its biggest problem.
