This show has a slow start, I'm not gonna lie, I almost dropped it. But for those who are patient enough and keep watching it until the end, it is totally worth it.
Gintama is my all time favorite anime and Sakata Gintoki is my all time favorite anime protagonist. The show contains action, humor and drama in a beautiful package. But what makes Gintama more charming than any other anime I've ever watched is how HUMAN the characters are. They feel like real life poeple with real life flaws and real life problems, no matter how ridiculous the premise of the show is (Japan invaded by aliens?). We see how the characters react to their problems, how they solve it, how they feel about it. Sometimes they don't make the best decision but isn't that what makes them human?
Furthermore, the characters all have different problems and different troubles, so we get to see from different perspectives as well, how to handle loneliness, how to handle self-esteem issues, how to handle prejudice, how to handle grief. The humor is also top-notch, though some of the jokes are a little dirty and some you have to read/watch lots of animes to understand.
Overall, Gintama is an amazing, one-of-a-kind anime, and it is a feel-good anime for me to watch when I'm feeling down. My mother passed away just recently and I'm still dealing with the grief, when it becomes too much, I watch Gintama and was reminded once again how the characters handle their suffering. It's not easy and sometimes it's too hard to handle, but you will have to move on eventually and if you hold on enough, you might find people who will help you carry that burden.
