As a lifelong Godzilla fan I can safely say this is my favorite. The monsters steal the show (especially the menacing King Ghidorah) but the human characters are for once perfectly watchable, too, especially Charles Dance, Ken Watanabe and Bobbie Brown. It may not have the drama or political message of the original or Shin Godzilla but it doesn't want to. Not too cheesy but not too serious either, it's a love letter to lifelong watchers: a Godzilla film made by Godzilla fans for Godzilla fans.
