I read a bunch of the 1 star reviews and it felt like the reviewers were reviewing the movie as homework for a college theater course. The narrative, incomplete arc blaa blaa blaa. A common complaint about this movie was it was predictable. Yes, it is established right away that the story is based on Tom taking caring for this little girl, so every scene points to that. But that is what the movie is about! Westerns aren't known for their twists and turns, they are meant to transport you to a time where times were tough. And that is what I enjoyed about this movie, I felt how terrifying it must be to be on the frontier with no safety net, no cell phone or 911 and dangers lurking around every corner.
