The film isn't terrible. The plotline is simple and easy to follow. There are A LOT of special effects overall so you should skip this movie if that's not your cup of tea.
My biggest gripe with the film is that I felt like I was getting an idealized version of Abraham Lincoln. Yes, he signed the Emancipation Proclamation but his views on black people were never super progressive. It would've been better to have Benjamin Walker play Lincoln the way Daniel Day-Lewis did in Lincoln (2012) in order to see him reconcile both his ever-changing political beliefs and vampire-hunting at the same time in order to add more depth to his character.
I liked Dominic Cooper's character. His performance was pretty good.
Anthony Mackie and Erin Wasson played good side roles but I wish those had been a bit more developed. Yes, Mackie played a real life person who knew Lincoln personally but he was reduced to little more than a plot device in the movie. Erin's character, who was a secondary antagonist, wasn't bad with her ruthlessness but even for a secondary character, I felt like her wickedness was all that defined her with literally no reason as to why that was the case. She didn't get enough screen time.
Rufus Sewell played a great villain in this story. I wish his background had been expanded on a bit more too. I felt like both his and Erin's characters weren't fleshed out enough as villains and that made their relationship with Lincoln on air seem a bit rushed to me.
Despite all my criticisms of this film, I still love the supernatural combined with the historical background of the setting.
Good film. Just needs some edits, imo.
