This movie was an utter letdown, flaunting potential that it never fulfilled. The suspenseful atmosphere couldn't compensate for the annoying little kid who seemed to excel at making the audience hate him. The so-called monster, supposedly a symbol of depression, looked like a rejected Halloween costume, and the decision to keep it in the basement after it nearly killed everyone was as nonsensical as it gets. The only saving grace was a fleeting glimpse of decent special effects towards the end, but overall, the film was more quirky and funny than genuinely creepy.
I don't sugarcoat opinions, and The Babadook deserves a scathing review. Marketed as a horror and thriller, it devolves into a boring abyss with unappealing content, unanswered questions, and average acting. It's a drama masquerading as a horror movie, and anyone claiming it's a top 10 horror film needs a reality check. I watched it due to its mention in the 5th Scream film, and the only scream it induced was of frustration. If this is Australia's horror offering, they should stick to kangaroo documentaries. Avoid The Babadook at all costs; it's a cinematic disaster.
