If Beale Street Could Talk – Its first utterance would be a repudiation of this movie as a work of art. The dialogue is ponderous, burdensome, uninspired and unrealistic. For example, in the initial sexual encounter, the most romantic exchange is “I won’t hurt you”! If the propagation of the human race depended on such drivel, its likely Adam and Eve would have been the last of our lot. My dentist is more passionate in saying these words.
The ethnic and religious stereotypes were so simplistic and obtuse as to be offensive. The only praiseworthy aspect of this movie were the vivid hues of brown and black in which the Black characters were rendered.
The ending was also good – not in the sense that the ending bound together disparate threads of a complex plot, but, more so in the sense that the ending was the cessation of torture I experienced as a movie goer. Much better movies are Green Book or Vice.
