First of all, people need to understand that this show is not the Office. NOTHING can ever be like the Office. That being said, even with shows as epic as the Office (or even Parks and Rec), I recall the shows started out a bit slow but eventually built up to something great. It took a lot of will power for me to keep watching because people had said keep going, it pays off eventually. I’m usually someone who’s like, if you can’t capture me in the first episode then that’s it. I disliked Michael Scott’s character so much, I don’t think I was able to watch him without cringing until season 3, but today I can honestly say he’s one of my best TV characters ever, so much so that I still haven’t been able to finish the series because the episodes after Carell left were just meh to me.
Circling back to Space Force, I’ll admit that because it’s Steve Carell, I expected to laugh way more than I did. I was a bit disappointed at first, but I do think the intention behind this first season was to set up the show for that great build up and character development. I don’t think they revealed why Lisa Kudrow’s character went to prison and that’s one thing I’m looking forward to. Honestly, they had better make it real good after all this suspense.
Also, critics keep saying how John Malkovich was the bright spot in the show. He’s good, but I found his delivery a bit slow and annoying sometimes, like just waiting on him to finish sentences. And if there’s any truth to what I read about critics giving Sharknado 82 and the Greatest Showman 56 on rotten tomatoes, I’m not sure I want to take the “critics” word for it. So don’t listen to the critics, or me even. Watch the show and form your own opinion people.
All in all, an okay show, good story and a few laughs. Nothing in particular stood out to me honestly so I’ll rate this first season average. I’ve come to appreciate the concept of the build up, and I really hope they make the next season good enough to make watching this first one worth it.
