Short and skinny. Lackluster. Obvious budget cuts, terrible fight sequences, and low character development.
Mulan is one of those movies that you really want to be good but just isn't....like Aladdin. It's really not because Disney couldnt have made it good(The jungle book, Cinderella), but just didn't. It's as if Disney tried to please everybody and instead of a huge starburst of wonderous delight in the sky, they give you a sparkler......oye.
The original animated version tugged at your heart strings as Mulan set off to do the impossible for the sake of her beloved father. You saw that despite the fact that she was just a young girl trying to find her place in the world, through her strength of character, Mulan accomplished the impossible and brought honor to her family. The live version's story was soggy and paled in comparison. All of the elements that made the animated version great was sorely lacking. Mulan's relationship with the other characters was extremely under developed and the story seemed rushed.
Disney used a lot of elements in this movie that left you either rolling your eyes or scratching your head in confusion. There were so many ways it could have been good, but it severely lacked ambition, courage, and good writing.
Is it so terrible? I would say wait and watch it for free later down the line. It's not worth $30 to watch it with your family only to experience this film that couldnt hold a candle, nay, a match to the original animation of Mulan. Wait for it to come out for free in three months.....you'll be glad you did.
