This day and age, it is unacceptable for story to have illogical plot. One thing that I must point out, there is nothing that forced the family to leave their cozy home with electricity, internet and clean water. This creature just came out of the cave for less than a week, but the behavior of the populace was like there is no more hope left and only death await.
