Well, now I know why mainstream critics despise this movie so much: because it's wholesome, pure, and innocent. The characters are all eminently likeable and don't need a reason to do what's right and help others. There is even some nice character growth with one who is outwardly gruff and seemingly unkind. Sure, it's a little cheesy, but no more so than any other kids movie. As a kid, I was thoroughly gripped by the story and tension, which has balanced out a little from the occasionally overly dark first installment. And going back as an adult for nostalgia's sake, I found it heartwarming and enjoyable. I'd certainly deem it a must-watch for your kids, who can learn a lot about empathy from this.
