The one star is for the animation. Beautiful animation, although sometimes a little frenetic.
I'm a Disney fan and have been watching Disney movies for decades. This was one of the worst Disney shows I've ever seen. The writing was abysmal. I cannot understand how this was green-lit. It was like the first draft of a story idea a bunch of students spin out when high and drunk at 3 am. Only when they wake up, they realize it's garbage. Whereas, these people just went with it.
There is no plot. Well, there's sort of a plot, only it's really weak and lacks depth and nothing much is at stake. None of the characters had an arc. Even the main character - drawn very well - has no real arc, except a narcissistic: "I have no gifts but I'm special. Look at me in the reflection!"
It was a mess. Most of the songs were about static or boring things. The first song was about the names of family members--I kid you not! Many songs were siblings singing once, usually to whine. One sibling whined that too many people relied on her and she was stressed. I'm not kidding! Another one whine-sang that she was perfect but was tired of being perfect, and is thrilled when she discovers she can also create cacti and have a streak of purple hair. None of the melodies were remotely memorable except for We Don't Talk About Bruno. That was the only actual song. None of the other songs were decent.
Basically, the only good things are: animation, good representation, and one song. Could've done all that with....the one song. When I think that Walt Disney once cut an entire song, already drawn, in Snow White because he thought it impeded the momentum and flow--And now on his anniversary no less we have an entire movie that impedes momentum. He must be spinning in his grave.
