without comparing this movie to the anime or manga, i can say that it is decent. the special effects are okay, the characters are not that like able and the acting is quite dry, but i enjoyed watching the movie. now if i compare this movie to the anime and manga, its horrible. every time i watch it, i just cringe. they butchered everything. this movie had potential, but there's nothing that really makes it stand out. i loved the death note anime, it's one of my favorites yet. the characters are so well written, the music is just *chefs kiss* and its so suspenseful and eerie. this movie is just... meh. let's do some quick character comparisons. light yagami in the anime - cunning, calm, smart, you can't help but love him even though you hate him. light in this movie - anxious, stupid, you can't help but hate him. L in the anime - secretive, intelligent, powerful, analytical, bold L in this movie - crybaby, seems smart at first but is really quite an idiot, not a threat to light once so ever misa in the anime - bubbly, ditsy yet quite smart, childlike, careless misa in this movie - manipulative, cruel, mature the difference in the personalities are really painful and it makes it difficult to watch. they made the characters so easy to dislike, where in the anime i almost started liking the main villians because they instead made them so easy to like. not to mention, they totally switched light and misa's relationship. in the anime, light USED misa since she had the shinigami eyes. misa loved light, however he did not reciprocate those feelings. in the movie, it seemed like misa was the one manipulating light and that HE was the one who loved misa instead. their relationship is one of the key aspects in the manga/anime and they totally ruined it which is quite dissapointing. the anime has this creepy charm to it that makes it quite terrifying, where the movie was just over exaggerated gore. the only thing i liked was ryuk. that's it. ryuk is the only good part of this movie. if i never watched the anime and i had to review the movie, i'd give it 2 stars. its okay. it's quite good for a basic horror movie, but it didn't catch my attention. it was quite boring and the acting was cheap.

I personally think people are being too hard on this movie. It's from the 1980s, it's not supposed to be the greatest movie ever written. One small mistake made in the movie should not affect your whole rating. This movie was really good in my opinion. The actors fit the roles PERFECTLY, no matter if their hair color was off by one shade. Ralph Macchio did near perfect as Johnny, he fit the description of Johnny from the book, "A puppy who's been kicked too many times" very well and his acting was golden and really stood out to me. C. Thomas Howell as Ponyboy was great, despite his acting being wooden at times, his acting later on in the movie outshined those bad moments. He looked almost exactly how I imagined him and did really great. Matt Dillion as Dally, oh boyyyy. It said in the book Dallas was supposed to be good looking but lord did I not expect this. Despite his wonderful looks, he did amazingggg, especially at the rumble. He has a wonderful aura that just looking at him makes you smile. Tom Cruise as Steve. Amazing. Honestly, amazing. His acting was great in this movie, just like it is now. Patrick Swayze as Darry really was great. He just looks so cold blooded and perfectly fits the mean demeanor Darry has in the book. Emilo Estevez as Two-Bit. Honestly perfect. He was funny and charming and a great actor. I personally think more jokes would've suited his character more, but he was just perfect the way he was. All in all, this movie was great, had an amazing storyline, great actors, and I really recommend you watch it.
