Love the series, comic book movies and shows are adolescent at best so when you can add real life situations that don't make you feel like your watching something made for a kid it really stands out. In 2019 we have more super hero movies then adult comedies and dramas. Adding real history that most people are not aware of provides education and entertainment at the same time.
You will either love the series or hate it, which I'm sure was the director's point. It seems being concerned with how some people would perceive certain elements on the show was not even a thought. Bass Reeves, the Tulsa Oklahoma Massacare, White Washing of historical figures, Female lead Characters, Gay Super heroes, etc.
If your unable to discuss historical and current events without being uncomfortable then this show isn't for you. This wasn't about white guilt or anti-whitness. The main black characters adopted white children, the main character was best friends with the white police chief, Hooded Justice was involved with a white super hero and everyone getting along was the general theme. The intent for the alien invasion was for war to end and everyone to get along. If your only concerned with being right and supporting your club of choice no matter what then you would find offense in a fictional tv show.
My only complaint was the gay twist, didn't understand why it was needed, it didn't add anything to the show. Confused as to why this element is added to every tv show or movie for the last 10 + years. Especially when black characters are involved, Hooded Justice's struggle was being black in America not gay. Although homophobia is real and a issue globally this served no purpose and added nothing to Hooded Justice's character development.
