Vaulted Skies (The Vaulted Skies)

Hilarious. An unusual choice brings originality that elevates this above other comedies, but it also kills some of the tension a little early. But overall, very likeable. Brilliant cast and dialogue.

Starts off so well - very much like a classic Spielberg. Shifts gear in interesting ways a couple of times too, but then sags so much in the third quarter that it took a lot of willpower to stick with it until the end, which was so-so. Lead actor is excellent. A believable chap who looks like a cross between Tobey Maguire and David Bowie. Could have been so good if the mid/later section had been tightened up.

The script, most of the acting and the special effects are all second rate (you can almost see the green screen). A dull, drawn-out affair that seems to last for eternity - pun intended. Marvel made a movie that looks and feels more like Batman vs Superman era DC universe. They’ve assumed we’ll buy into all these characters instantly, when they worked so hard to prep us for assembling the Avengers, which is strange. Net result, hard to care about any of the characters. Angelina Jolie is good. That’s about it.

I loved every single minute of this film. The cast is wonderful and it gets the balance between nostalgia and something fresh to hit all the right spots. Hilarious, adorable and I can’t wait to watch it again!

Another Edgar Wright masterpiece. A much more mature one.

Wholly engaging and highly relevant. Taps into a feeling many of can relate to, that people are becoming more selfish. Then explores what happens if we stand up for ourselves, without becoming another ‘Falling Down’, or letting the central protagonist suddenly become a superhero or a supervillain. All of the acting is pitch perfect. It has heart without being schmaltzy. Perfectly balanced across the board.

There’s lots to appreciate about this film, but I can’t say I enjoyed it much. It has some points to make about the absurdity of so-called safety measures around the purchase of firearms in America, but all the best bits are otherwise in the trailer. The tone veers into territory too dark for my liking, which makes for a jarring and uncomfortable watch. To that end, it’s a missed opportunity. Rex Kwon Do it ain’t.

A beautiful, poignant, daring film, full of humour and pathos, with an important message for our times.

JJ Abrams rescues the franchise from the jaws of Rian Johnson, and gives the Skywalker saga the send-off it deserves. Many reviews are coming in at the 3-star mark, and this seems woefully unfair considering the generous 4-star reviews its predecessor got away with. Perhaps they just don’t know what they’re looking at and are simply trying to bring balance to The Force after over-praising the Harry-Potter-inspired Episode VIII. Bottom line, if you’re a fan of the original trilogy, enjoyed The Force Awakens and wish The Last Jedi had been better handled, this is the film you’ve been waiting for.
