I personally think this movie is outstanding. Looking past the blatant gore, its moving in a horrific and disturbing way. It seems to give the watcher a peep-hole straight into the mind of the demented psychopath, Jack. Yes, he has messed up ideas, but there have been people with those same, and even more messed up thoughts.
The philosophy on how art can be horrific and morbid but still beautiful, fascinates me. And our primal instincts of hunter and hunted, Those same philosophies make me ponder our societal constructs, and how life we live is merely a construct of our own design that can be morphed and shaped and rebuilt as we choose. That's merely scratching the surface, but looking past the depictions of death and mutilation there is some sort of meaning behind it that has to be squeezed out by the consumers. It's more philosophically than just a movie about a serial killer. Everything in the film is done for a reason, and I feel like it shows when the dust on the surface is pushed away.
