A stunning book. an adaptation of Handy's Phd. thesis that is as relevant today as when it was written. Some scholars are critical of some of Handy's interpretations, particularly those found in the later part of the book concerning 'the Tangaroa cult'. However other interpretations such as the primacy of mana, as the energy of nature conceived of as 'procreational energy' seem spot on. A brave book, and one of the few academic entries into this fascinating field of enquiry.
